A base layer is the first and closest layer in a functional clothing system. Worn directly against the skin, its primary purpose is to absorb and transport moisture away from the body. This helps keep the skin comfortably dry during activity and reduces the risk of cooling down during less active periods caused by damp clothing.

Especially when sailing, physically demanding maneuvers and quieter phases often alternate. Hoisting sails, tacking, or working on deck generates body heat, while wind, spray, and extended periods of sitting can quickly cool the body afterward.
